What is a ‘passport photograph’?

  • Each test participant must provide two identical photos, which have been taken in the last month.
  • The photos should be printed on normal photographic paper and should be 45 mm x 35 mm in size.
  • The photo should show a close up of the participant’s head and shoulders so that their face covers 65-75% of the photo.
  • It should be taken against an off-white, cream or light grey plain background so that the participant’s features are clearly distinguishable against the background.
  • The photo must be of the applicant on their own, with no other people, toys or dummies visible. It must show their full face, looking straight at the camera, with a neutral expression, with their mouth closed.
  • Nothing should be written on the back.

See the UK Passport Service website for full details.

Suitable photographs can be obtained from automatic photo booths located in some railway stations, post offices and shops. For very young babies, it may be easier to ask a photo processing shop to take their passport approved picture.

Alternatively, you can use your own camera or phone (of least 3 megapixels) and upload the image to Picture Lizard who offer a guaranteed approved passport photo service.

I want a Legal DNA test before registering the birth.
In this case, you can bring the forms that the hospital provides (which are what you would produce at the Register Office when registering the child) instead of a birth certificate. nb a child can be registered with just the mother’s name and the father can be added later at no charge.

To discuss a Legal DNA test please contact us.
